What is a Bridging Visa and why you don’t need to close your old KITAS?
Why the EPO (Exit Permit Only) Procedure is Not Required When Switching from One KITAS to Another via a Bridging Visa:
1.. According to Indonesian immigration regulations, a person cannot hold two active immigration statuses at the same time. If you try to apply for a new KITAS while your current one is still active — without closing it first — the system will generate a conflict. In such cases, immigration will indeed require you to complete the EPO process (manual closure of the previous KITAS) before proceeding with the new visa.
2..When applying for a new KITAS through a Bridging Visa, the logic is different. This is not a second visa layered over the existing one. The Bridging Visa replaces your current KITAS — there is a "switch" in the system, changing your status from KITAS to BRIDGING.
In the immigration system, this appears as a function next to your current KITAS — with the option to select “change status to Bridging Visa.” This is the official mechanism to initiate the transition, during which the previous status is canceled and replaced with the Bridging Visa.
Once the Bridging Visa is issued, the previous KITAS ceases to exist:
you can no longer use it,
you cannot close it manually,
If you check the system via the e-visa portal (you can do this yourself or ask us for a screenshot), the same KITAS number will now show the Bridging Visa instead. Even if you wanted to initiate the closure procedure later, it would be impossible, because your status has already been replaced and the old KITAS no longer exists.
The process then continues: That same Bridging Visa is converted into your new KITAS E33G.
